One of the most common questions parents ask before enrolling is whether their child is the right age. Too young feels daunting. Too old and you wonder if you've missed something. The honest answer is there's no single best age, but there are some things worth knowing at each stage.
Best age to start childcare: what to know at each stage
From 6 weeks: baby day care
Kaleidoscope Kids centres welcome babies from six weeks of age. For many families this comes down to when parental leave ends rather than a developmental ideal. If you're returning to work early, quality baby day care provides a safe, nurturing environment with low staff-to-baby ratios and routines that mirror what you'd do at home.
Research consistently shows that high-quality care from an early age supports healthy development. What matters most is the quality of the environment and the consistency of the caregivers, not the age itself.

1 to 3 years: early learning
The toddler years are when children start developing language, social skills and independence at a rapid pace. Many parents find this is a natural time to start childcare, as children become more curious about other kids and respond well to structured play and group activities.
Starting in this age range also gives children time to settle into a routine before the kindergarten year, which makes the transition to kindy much smoother.
3 to 5 years: kindergarten
The year before school is when early learning really starts to count. Queensland's kindergarten program supports children to develop the skills they need for Prep, from literacy and numeracy foundations through to social and emotional readiness.
Eligible 4-year-olds can access Queensland Free Kindy, providing 15 hours of subsidised kindergarten per week during school terms. If your child is approaching this age it's worth understanding your eligibility early as spots fill up. Read our Queensland Free Kindy 2026 guide for full details.
Signs your child might be ready
Every child is different but some common signs include showing curiosity about other children, being able to separate from you for short periods without distress, starting to follow simple instructions and showing interest in play and activities.
If your child isn't showing these signs yet that doesn't mean they're not ready. Many children who seem hesitant at home thrive quickly once they're in a centre environment with consistent educators and engaging activities.
Signs you might be ready
It's worth saying: parental readiness matters too. Feeling confident about the centre you choose, understanding the settling-in process and knowing what to expect in the first few weeks makes a big difference to how smoothly the transition goes.

What about cost?
Age affects fees, with under-3s generally attracting higher daily rates due to staffing ratios. The Child Care Subsidy applies from 6 weeks of age so most families receive support regardless of when they start. Use our CCS calculator to estimate your costs.
