When you're comparing childcare centres, the daily fee is usually the first number you look at. But what that fee actually covers varies a lot from one centre to the next, and the gap fee you end up paying after Child Care Subsidy can look very different depending on your family's situation.
Here's a straightforward breakdown of how childcare fees work in Queensland and what to look for when comparing your options.
What affects the daily fee?
Childcare fees in Queensland vary between centres based on a few key factors:
Age of your child.
Younger children, particularly babies and toddlers under three, typically attract higher fees due to the lower staff-to-child ratios required by law. As children move into the three to five age group the daily rate generally decreases.
Session length.
Most centres offer sessions of 6, 9, 10 or 12 hours. Longer sessions cost more, though many families book a standard full day to cover their work hours.
What's included.
This is where fees can look similar on paper but be very different in practice. Some centres charge separately for meals, nappies and sunscreen on top of the base fee. Others, like Kaleidoscope Kids, include all of these in the daily rate so there are no surprise add-ons.
Location.
Centres in higher-cost areas or with purpose-built facilities may charge more than older or smaller centres nearby.
What does Kaleidoscope Kids include in the daily fee?
At all Kaleidoscope Kids centres, the daily fee covers:
Freshly prepared meals and snacks throughout the day
Nappies and wipes for children under three years
Sunscreen
All learning programs and activities
This means families aren't paying extra for the basics, and there's genuinely less to pack each morning.

How does Child Care Subsidy reduce what you pay?
The Child Care Subsidy is a government payment that reduces your out-of-pocket childcare costs. The amount you receive depends on your combined family income, how many hours of approved activity you do each week (work, study, volunteering etc) and the type of service.
CCS is paid directly to the childcare service and you pay the difference, known as the gap fee. For many Queensland families the subsidy covers a significant portion of the daily fee.

What else should you factor in?
Beyond the daily rate it's worth asking about:
The enrolment fee. At Kaleidoscope Kids there is a one-off $40 enrolment fee per child which includes a hat, drink bottle, bag and t-shirt.
Permanent vs casual bookings. Permanent days are guaranteed but charged whether your child attends or not. CCS covers up to 42 absent days per financial year.
Late collection fees. Most centres including Kaleidoscope Kids charge a late fee if children aren't collected by closing time.
